Afgelopen maand verscheen hij eindelijk: de Aston Martin DB5 van Playmobil. En je raad het al: ik was vroeger niet van de Playmobil, maar de Lego. En als je oudste zoon van 5 ook helemaal verknocht is aan de steentjes uit Denemarken, was het best een uitdaging om een review te schrijven. Of toch niet?
Toen we de vraag neerlegde bij het Duitse speelgoedmerk Playmobil om een review te schrijven van de Aston Martin DB5 waren ze verrast. Ze hadden nooit gedacht dat er zo’n animo voor zou zijn en dat wij aandacht wilden besteden aan kinderspeelgoed. Dus alles was snel in kannen en kruiken, alleen moesten we nog wel wachten op de officiële releasedatum. En zo kwam het dat op een dag de pakketbezorger aan de deur stond met een pakketje van Playmobil. Natuurlijk was ik heel nieuwsgierig, en ik bleek niet de enige te zijn!
Last month, it finally appeared: the Aston Martin DB5 by Playmobil. And you guessed it: I used to be Lego rather than Playmobil. And when your eldest 5-year-old son is also totally wedded to the bricks from Denmark, it was quite a challenge to write a review. Or was it?
When we put the question to German toy brand Playmobil to write a review of the Aston Martin DB5, they were surprised. They never thought there would be such enthusiasm for it and that we wanted to pay attention to children’s toys. So everything was quickly in place, only we still had to wait for the official release date. And so it came to pass that one day the parcel deliverer was at the door with a package from Playmobil. Of course I was very curious, and it turned out I was not the only one!
Mijn oudste zoon, ondertussen vijf jaar, zag de doos en herkende natuurlijk het logo en de bekende poppetjes. “He, dat is van Playmobil! Wat is dat papa?” En dit beste lezers, is de eerste keer dat mijn zoon in aanraking komt met geheim agent 007. Wat blijkt: de Aston Martin DB5 uit Goldfinger blijkt het mooiste product te zijn om op een simpele manier een kind te vertellen over James Bond. En het triggerde mij ook om eens na te denken hoe ik in Jip en Janneke-taal kon uitleggen wie James Bond is.
En daarbij was de auto, samen met de vier poppetjes, een cruciaal onderdeel. Deze auto hoort bij James Bond. Dat is iemand die de wereld red en vecht tegen de slechteriken. Deze meneer (Goldfinger) is de slechterik. En vervolgens Oddjob en de henchmen benoemd. Daarna door naar het verhaal van de Aston Martin. James Bond wordt gevangengenomen door de meneer met de hoed. Daarna moet James Bond zelf rijden en komt de meneer met de blauwe kleren naast hem zitten. En dan gebeurt er iets wonderlijks: de man in de blauwe kleren wordt samen met de stoel uit de auto van James Bond gelanceerd.
Mijn zoon kijkt mij aan. Glinsteringen in zijn ogen en hij begint te lachen. “Je maakt een grapje” zei hij, “Dat kan helemaal niet papa.” En daarna laat ik hem de schietstoel van de plastic Aston Martin zien. Hoe mooi is het als je je kind zo ziet glunderen?!
My eldest son, now five, saw the box and of course recognised the logo and the familiar dolls. “Hey, that’s from Playmobil! What’s that daddy?” And this dear readers, is my son’s first encounter with secret agent 007. As it turns out, the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger turns out to be the best product to tell a child about James Bond in a simple way. And it also triggered me to think about how to explain in Jip and Janneke language who James Bond is.
And in this, the car, along with the four puppets, was a crucial part. This car belongs to James Bond. This is someone who saves the world and fights the bad guys. This gentleman (Goldfinger) is the bad guy. And then named Oddjob and the henchmen. Then on to the story of the Aston Martin. James Bond is captured by the gentleman with the hat. Then James Bond has to drive himself and the gentleman with the blue clothes comes and sits next to him. And then something miraculous happens: the man in the blue clothes is launched out of James Bond’s car along with the seat.
My son looks at me. Glint in his eyes and he starts laughing. “You’re joking” he said, “You can’t do that at all dad.” And then I show him the ejector seat of the plastic Aston Martin. How nice it is when you see your child glow like that!
Wellicht is de Aston Martin DB5 wel het begin van zijn James Bond-avontuur. Tenslotte ben ik er dagelijks mee bezig en zeker nu midden in de tijd van de release van een nieuwe film, is het 007 wat de klok slaat. We hebben een paar scènes van de DB5 samen bekeken, zoals het stukje uit Goldfinger met de schietstoel. En ook heel veel interesse heeft hij voor de achter-de-schermen filmpjes van de DB5 in No Time To Die. Kortom: deze unieke auto zal hij altijd verbinden aan James Bond.
Maar nu terug waarvoor dit artikel bedoeld was: een recensie over de beroemde Aston Martin DB5 uit Goldfinger. Wat meteen opvalt is de stijlvolle, zwartgrijze doos die helemaal bij James Bond past. Voorzichtig de stickers aan de zijkant met een mesje opengesneden om de doos zo min mogelijk te beschadigen. En daar was hij dan: de DB5 in de kleur Silver Birch en daarboven, netjes in vakjes, de vier figuurtjes. James Bond, Auric Goldfinger, Oddjob en een henchman keken mij vriendelijk met de kenmerkende Playmobil-oogjes aan.
Perhaps the Aston Martin DB5 is the beginning of his James Bond adventure. After all, I’m with it every day and especially now in the middle of the time of a new film’s release, it’s 007 all the rage. We watched a few scenes of the DB5 together, like the bit from Goldfinger with the ejector seat. And he is also very interested in the behind-the-scenes footage of the DB5 in No Time To Die. In short: he will always associate this unique car with James Bond.
But now back to what this article was for: a review of the famous Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger. What immediately stands out is the stylish, black-grey box that totally suits James Bond. Carefully cut open the side stickers with a knife to minimise damage to the box. And there it was: the DB5 in Silver Birch colour and above it, neatly compartmentalised, the four figures. James Bond, Auric Goldfinger, Oddjob and a henchman looked kindly at me with the characteristic Playmobil eyes.
De eerste 10 minuten was ik nog bezig om de auto in elkaar te zetten. Niet heel moeilijk, maar het moest even gedaan worden: de koplampen erin, achterlichten plaatsen, de schietstoel in positie brengen en voor en achter de kentekenplaatstickers erop plakken. Maar daarna was hij wel klaar voor actie. De auto heeft geen schaalaanduiding. Maar als ik de auto naast de replica van AutoArtzet, komen ze aardig overeen. Dus ongeveer 1:18. De poppetjes daarentegen: die hebben geen schaal. Als ze in de auto zitten valt het niet zo snel op. Maar daarbuiten: dan is in verhouding de DB5 een soort terreinwagen geworden. Maar dat mag de pret zeker niet drukken.
The first 10 minutes I was still putting the car together. Not very difficult, but it needed some doing: putting in the headlights, putting in the rear lights, putting the ejector seat in position and putting on the front and rear number plate stickers. But after that, it was ready for action. The car has no scale marking. But when I put the car next to AutoArt’s replica, they match pretty well. So about 1:18. The dolls, on the other hand: they have no scale. When they are in the car, it is not so obvious. But outside: then in proportion the DB5 has become a kind of off-road vehicle. But that certainly shouldn’t spoil the fun.
Je kan zien dat Playmobil voor deze set heeft samengewerkt met Aston Martin en EON Productions. Er is veel aandacht besteedt aan de auto en de poppetjes. Het mechanisme voor de schietstoel is redelijk kindproof. En vooral simpel: klik de stoel in de vergrendeling en duw de uitlaatpijpen naar beneden. De poppetjes dragen kleding zoals ook in de film te zien was. Als aanvulling zit er nog een verrekijker bij en een viertal goudbaren. Die missen wel een beetje zijn functie, maar een kind kan hiermee wel losgaan op zijn fantasie.
En binnenkort zal ik waarschijnlijk met mijn zoon maar eens een bezoek moeten gaan brengen aan het Louwman Museum in Den Haag. Daar staat een van de twee promotie auto’s van Thunderball (1965).
You can see that Playmobil has collaborated with Aston Martin and EON Productions for this set. A lot of thought has gone into the car and the dolls. The ejector seat mechanism is fairly childproof. And mostly simple: click the seat into the lock and push down the exhaust pipes. The dolls wear clothes as seen in the film. In addition, it comes with binoculars and four gold bars. These do miss their function a bit, but a child can let their imagination run wild with this.
And soon I will probably just have to visit the Louwman Museum in The Hague with my son. There is one of the two promotional cars from Thunderball (1965) there.
