De meeste onder begeleiding van het boek On The Tracks Of 007. Vorige week verscheen er een speciale editie over Thailand.
Anyone who thinks of James Bond thinks of fast cars, beautiful women and above all: the beautiful locations where filming took place. Many a James Bond fan travels the world to visit these locations. Most accompanied by the book On The Tracks Of 007. Last week, it published a special edition on Thailand.
Het avontuur van On The Tracks Of 007 begon 25 jaar geleden. In het voorwoord laat Martijn Mulder weten dat dit hem meer plezier heeft gebracht dat hij ooit had kunnen bedenken. “Het bracht mij niet alleen op de mooiste plekken van de wereld, maar ook leerde ik heel veel mensen kennen waarvan ik sommige zelfs als mijn vrienden kan bestempelen”. Het eerste verhaal wat hij ooit schreef over het reizen naar James Bond-locaties ging over Azië.
The adventure of On The Tracks Of 007 began 25 years ago. In the preface, Martijn Mulder reveals that it brought him more pleasure than he could ever have imagined. “It not only brought me to the most beautiful places in the world, but I also got to know a lot of people, some of whom I can even refer to as my friends”. The first story he ever wrote about travelling to James Bond locations was about Asia.
In 1995 begon Martijn zijn hobby: het vinden van filmlocaties uit James Bond-films. Het internet stond in de kinderschoenen en alles Googelen was er nog niet bij. Hij startte zijn eigen website met de titel The James Bond Locations Page. Met informatie ui verschillende magazines, krantenartikelen en boeken. Zo kwam hij in contact met wijlen Dirk Kloosterboer. Hij was in 1995 of 1996 in Hong Kong en Thailand geweest. Ze hadden ondertussen ook zoveel informatie dat het idee ontstond om er een boek over uit te geven. Hun eerst verhaal werd Faces Of Asia, gebaseerd op informatie van de reis die Dirk had gemaakt. Het werd het begin van wat uiteindelijk het boek On The Tracks of 007 zou worden. Zelf reisde Martijn pas in 2005 naar het Verre Oosten.
In 1995, Martijn started his hobby: finding film locations from James Bond films. The internet was in its infancy and Googling everything was not yet an option. He started his own website titled The James Bond Locations Page. With information ui various magazines, newspaper articles and books. This is how he came into contact with the late Dirk Kloosterboer. He had been to Hong Kong and Thailand in 1995 or 1996. In the meantime, they had so much information that the idea arose to publish a book about it. Their first story became Faces Of Asia, based on information from the trip Dirk had made. It became the beginning of what would eventually become the book On The Tracks of 007. Martijn himself did not travel to the Far East until 2005.
Voor de uitgevers die we aanschreven hadden we een A5, met spiraal gebonden hand-out gemaakt van Faces Of Asia. Tussen de regels door witte vlakken gelaten, waar we foto’s tussen konden plakken. Het was het beste wat we toen konden. Nu kan ik er alleen maar om lachen.

For the publishers we were writing to, we had made an A5, spiral-bound handout of Faces Of Asia. Left white spaces between the lines, where we could stick photos in between. It was the best we could do at the time. Now I can only laugh about it.

Faces Of Asia 2.0
Het oorspronkelijke verhaal van Faces Of Asia richtte zich op de steden Hong-Kong en Macau plus Thailand. Maar in de loop der jaren is er ook veel meer informatie gekomen over bijvoorbeeld de plaats waar de spiraalsprong met de AMC Hornet uit The Man With The Golden Gun (1974) heeft plaatsgevonden. In de “nieuwe” versie is dan ook besloten om alleen Thailand te beschrijven, waar een deel van The Man With The Golden Gun en Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) werden opgenomen.
Faces Of Asia 2.0
The original story of Faces Of Asia focused on the cities of Hong-Kong and Macau plus Thailand. But over the years, much more information has emerged about, for example, where the spiral jump with the AMC Hornet from The Man With The Golden Gun (1974) took place. In the “new” version, it was therefore decided to describe only Thailand, where part of The Man With The Golden Gun and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) were shot.

Het nieuwe boek valt op met de omslag. Net als het eerder verschenen boek over Japan is de omslag getekend door Jeff Marshall. Op de cover prijken Roger Moore en Pierce Brosnan en diverse scènes uit beide films.
Het boek bevat niet alleen heel veel informatie uit het oorspronkelijke Faces Of Asia, ook heeft Martijn informatie gekregen van diverse James Bond-fans die het land hebben bezocht. Veel nieuwe informatie en foto’s werden door Thomas Gleitsmann gedeeld. Hij vond vooral veel locaties uit de film Tomorrow Never Dies.
Het nieuwe boek heeft drie categorieën: Welcome To Thailand, Bangkok en Phang Nga Bay. Ook is er een duidelijk overzicht waar de diverse kaarten in het boek te vinden zijn. Vooral handig dus als je op reis gaat.
On The Tracks of 007: Guide To Thailand
The new book stands out with its cover. Like the previously published book on Japan, the cover is drawn by Jeff Marshall. The cover features Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan and several scenes from both films.
Not only does the book contain a lot of information from the original Faces Of Asia, Martijn also got information from several James Bond fans who visited the country. A lot of new information and photos were shared by Thomas Gleitsmann. In particular, he found many locations from the film Tomorrow Never Dies.
The new book has three categories: Welcome To Thailand, Bangkok and Phang Nga Bay. There is also a clear overview of where to find the various maps in the book. So especially handy when you are travelling.
Welcome To Thailand
Het eerste hoofdstuk gaat over Thailand. Niet alleen James Bond staat centraal. Het boek begint met algemene informatie over het land, zoals het klimaat en de economie. Ook wordt er kort stilgestaan bij andere grote films die in het land werden opgenomen, zoals Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Alexander (2004) en de negende film uit de Fast & Furious-reeks (2021). En zo rollen we in de James Bond-films die er werden opgenomen.
Bangkok
De Thaise hoofdstad met meer dan 8 miljoen inwoners was het decor voor veel scènes uit The Man With The Golden Gun. Zo werden er diverse scènes met Mary Goodnight in een hotel opgenomen en vinden we in Bangkok de karateschool van Hai Fat. Ook twee achtervolgingen uit de film werden er opgenomen: de bootachtervolging door de kanalen van de stad en de achtervolging met de AMC Hornet die eindigde met de beroemde spiraalsprong.
Welcome To Thailand
The first chapter is about Thailand. It is not just James Bond that takes centre stage. The book starts with general information about the country, such as its climate and economy. It also briefly discusses other major films that were shot in the country, such as Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Alexander (2004) and the ninth film in the Fast & Furious series (2021). And so we roll into the James Bond films that were shot there.
Bangkok
The Thai capital of more than 8 million people was the setting for many scenes from The Man With The Golden Gun. For instance, several scenes with Mary Goodnight were shot in a hotel and we find Hai Fat’s karate school in Bangkok. Two chases from the film were also shot there: the boat chase through the city’s canals and the chase with the AMC Hornet that ended with the famous spiral jump.
Phang Nga Bay
Het laatste gedeelte van het boek gaat over de locaties rondom de baai. Een bepaalt eiland werd wereldberoemd en later omgedoopt tot James Bond Island. Het is het eiland waar Francisco Scaramanga zijn basis heeft. In deze omgeving werden ook opnames gemaakt voor Tomorrow Never Dies, waarbij James Bond en Wai Lin achter de stealth boot van Carver aangingen.
Phang Nga Bay
The last part of the book is about the locations around the bay. One particular island became world-famous and was later renamed James Bond Island. It is the island where Francisco Scaramanga has his base. This area was also the scene of filming for Tomorrow Never Dies, where James Bond and Wai Lin went after Carver’s stealth boat.
Reisboek
De nieuwe uitgave van On The Tracks of 007 is wederom een echte reisgids. Elk onderdeel begint met een kaart waar locaties op staan aangegeven met een letter. Daarna lees je de informatie met beelden uit de film en hoe de locatie er nu uit ziet. De letters komen hierbij weer terug. Overzichtelijk met veel informatie. Een echte aanrader voor elke James Bond-liefhebber die er graag op uittrekt naar verre oorden waar 007 ook is geweest.
Voorwoord
Het voorwoord van On The Tracks of 007: Guide To Thailand is van Bond-girl Britt Ekland (Mary Goodnight in The Man With The Golden Gun). Ze verteld over het geweldige avontuur in Thailand en vooral de glamour van het filmmaken: van luxe hotels tot een hutje op een Thais eiland zonder goede voorzieningen.
Naast het originele boek van On The Tracks of 007 verscheen al eerder een special On the Tracks of 007: Guide To Japan. Naast de boeken organiseerde Martijn afgelopen decennia ook unieke groepsreizen naar de locaties van de James Bond-films, zoals de Aston Martin Tour (2013) en de Amsterdam Tour (2015). In 2017 ging een groep onder leiding van Martijn naar Japan ter viering van de 50e verjaardag van You Only Live Twice (1967). Dat was een groot succes dat vorig jaar hetzelfde werd gedaan voor de viering van 50 jaar On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). Samen met James Bond George Lazenby ging de groep naar Portugal en Zwitserland, waar grote delen van de film werden opgenomen.
On The Tracks Of 007: Guide To Thailand bevat 136 pagina’s, honderden foto’s van achter de schermen en beelden van toen en van nu. Het boek komt in 2 verschillende edities: de gewone editie (€ 30,–) en een gelimiteerde gesigneerde editie (€ 50,–). Travel guide
The new edition of On The Tracks of 007 is once again a true travel guide. Each section starts with a map where locations are marked with a letter. Then you read the information with images from the film and what the location looks like now. The letters return in this section. Clear with lots of information. Highly recommended for any James Bond lover who likes to go to faraway places where 007 has also been.
